England’s last working slate mine alive in the heart of the Lake District. Our business is at the top of Honister Pass – one of the steepest roads in the country where we source our slate from deep inside a neighbouring mountain, Fleetwith Pike.
Slate has been mined here at Honister Slate Mine for centuries… from occupying Romans to ancient Monks and Victorian pioneers. Working 11 miles of underground tunnels, we preserve expertise and have an appreciation for Honister Green Slate, using ancient techniques to make truly unique contemporary products.
